Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Business Officer I is an entry level business administration professional that serves as the primary business leader for assigned functional areas within the division of Academic Affairs. In addition, this position reconciles, evaluates, and analyzes financial data and actions to support the functions of the division. Also, this position supports the Director and Business Officer for Division Administration. This position processes and submits budget revisions, purchasing transactions, journal entries, budget reconciliations, pay assignments as needed, and works with units and vendors to resolve issues as they arise

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, or related business area; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Ability to provide budgeting and planning recommendations and modeling based on established goals and constraints ·

  • Ability to anticipate the needs and requirements of senior leadership to proactivity prepare recommendations, information, and solutions ·

  • Ability to proactively solve problems and identify solutions for routine challenges. ·

  • Ability to utilize advanced Microsoft Excel functionality to track, analyze and report financial data ·

  • Ability to explain financial information to stakeholders whose core competency is not financial

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and fund accounting · Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills that allow for the establishment of solid working relationships ·

  • Intermediate technical skills to use a variety of software and systems (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Teams, Zooms, SharePoint, Forms, Power Automate, DocuSign, etc.) ·

  • Ability to translate polices, laws, and institutional practices into local business processes that support specific unit needs ·

  • Ability to work in a fast paced, deadline driven work environment; self-starter committed to excellent performance; ability to adapt to an ever-changing work environment ·

  • Experience in business administration in public higher education ·

  • Experience using Banner or similar ERP

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Academic Affairs Divisional Operations (AADO) supports the Provost & Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs in the oversight of divisional personnel and financial resources. This unit has three primary functions: (1) Academic Personnel Administration, (2) Academic Resource Administration which includes a common support function that provides business administration support to divisional units that do not have a dedicated business officer, and (3) divisional marketing and communication coordination

Academic Affairs Resource Administration (AARA) provides both operational/transactional support and data/analysis that enables planning, informed decision-making, and business modeling. We believe the AARA team advances the Division of Academic Affairs through subject matter experts that integrate across the division to promote and ensure success by seeking solutions while advocating for accountability. The Division of Academic Affairs is comprised of 13 major units (including four academic colleges, eight functional areas, and one Provost level center) and over 100 departmental units, which represents approximately 75% of a $300M university budget and about 60% of a nearly 1,900 permanent and time-limited employees
