Facilities Maintenance provides exceptional maintenance, repair and services to the Florida State University community.

Maintenance, repair, and renewal are required to provide the best possible environment to support communities of learning and facilitate the ability of the University to carrying out its mission of education, scholarship and public service.

Facilities Operation and Maintenance are responsible for the following:

  • The care, safety, and security of physical assets at Florida State University.

  • The condition of buildings and building systems.

  • Providing a suitable internal environment.

  • Cost effective operation of building systems.

This position is assigned to work in the Housing buildings.

This position is responsible for performing a broad spectrum of routine maintenance in all residence halls.Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintains heating and cooling systems in assigned building(s), including but not limited to such tasks as replacement of zone valves, electric thermostats, fan motors, bearings, shafts, pulleys and belts. Daily inspection of mechanical rooms, including inspections of all gauges, thermometers, and equipment to monitor heating, cooling and domestic hot water systems.

  • Maintains electrical systems in assigned building(s), including but not limited to such tasks as replacement receptacles, switches, ballasts, light fixtures, exit lights, exhaust fans, stove burner elements and oven thermostats.

  • Maintains plumbing systems and equipment in assigned building(s), including but not limited to tasks such as toilet repair and replacement, repairs or replacement of all faucets, repair of all leaks and drain line issues or backups.

  • Performs maintenance and repairs to all other systems and hardware throughout assigned buildings.

  • Helps with projects being done by the trades crews in assigned buildings, and other related duties as assigned by a supervisor.

  • Documents all work performed and orders materials on appropriate departmental forms; records data on preventive maintenance logs as required. Maintains tools and equipment, organizes and clean assigned shop area as required on a daily basis.


High school diploma or equivalency and two years experience or a combination of post high school education and experience equal to two years. Technical or vocational may substitute for experience.

  • Driver's License, Class E

  • Ability to utilize problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to interpret complex written specifications and conditions.

  • Ability to demonstrate critical thinking based upon in-depth data, substantiating information, considering and respecting others' input personal values, and ethics.

  • Ability to utilize technical skills.

  • Knowledge of the practices and the ability to perform skilled carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or other related trades work.

  • Knowledge of and ability to identify safety hazards and necessary safety precautions to establish a safe work environment.

Other Information

The position incumbent is required to be accessible and available to return to work during off-duty hours. Eligibility is limited to USPS employees who shall be informed by the department via memorandum of the on-call assignment, except during an emergency. Per FSU policy, Pay Additives, incumbents are eligible to receive on-call pay.

Anticipated Salary Range

The minimum salary for this position is $32,920.00.
