Manatee County Emergency Medical Services is the primary 911-emergency response service to the citizens and visitors of Manatee County. We operate over 21 ALS and BLS units, consisting of ambulances, firefighter paramedics in fire apparatus, supervisory staff, and community paramedics. During 2022 these units responded to over 57,000 calls for service. We are a third service provider, meaning we are government run emergency medical system that is not fire department based. We serve a population of over 403,000 people. We respond to all prehospital medical calls for service in the 748 square miles of Manatee County and 150 miles of coastal water ways.


As an Emergency Medical Services District Chief, you will supervise day-to-day activities of assigned Emergency Medical Services (EMS) field personnel and ensure Section goals are met while high-quality customer service is maintained. You may administer patient care consistent with department protocols and physician orders. The Emergency Medical Services District Chief ensures compliance with government regulations, medical protocols, and internal policies.

Job Description




What You Will Do


  • Assigns work and delegates responsibilities to staff and monitor’s progress.

  • Assists with other personnel activities of staff such as hiring, training, performance appraisals, scheduling, disciplinary matters, rewarding, and motivating.

  • Cultivates strong working relationships and builds trust among team members.

  • Performs technical work in the provision of basic emergency care and transportation. Under the direction of a physician, by written protocol or direct communication, provides advanced emergency medical care (Advanced Life Support) for the acutely sick and injured as defined in Florida Statute 401 and Florida Administrative Code 64J-1.

  • Represents the EMS Division, Public Safety Department, and/or Manatee County Government at community and industry meetings and events.



Who You Are


  • Comprehensive knowledge of, and ability to apply with a high level of skill and confidence, basic and advanced techniques, procedures, and equipment used in the provision of pre-hospital medical treatment.

  • Thoroughly familiar with and able to initiate and manage an emergency incident according to the National Incident Management System ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills, radio communications skills, and interpersonal skills in order to interact professionally and effectively with staff, management, the general public, and other stakeholders.

  • Able to prioritize tasks, deal effectively with competing and changing priorities, and meet deadlines. Accurate, detail-oriented, and organized. Able to resolve difficult situations and problems.








Minimum Qualifications




Pre-Employment Physical Requirements



  • Must successfully pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical and department-approved Agility Test.




  • Note: Safety Sensitive position requires random drug testing.





Required Skills



  • Associates degree in Paramedicine, Emergency Medical Technology, or a related field.

  • 3 or more years of experience as a Charge Paramedic with advanced life support 9-1-1 System.

  • Florida State Paramedic, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Emergencies for Pre-Hospital Providers (PEPP) and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

  • Valid driver's license with valid Florida driver's license within 30 days of hire.



Desired Skills/ Certifications



  • EMS Preceptor/Field Training Officer designation and/or progressive demonstration of leadership ability or experience desired.
