Role Summery:
The Safety Operation Superintendent is responsible for overseeing and managing the organization's safety programs to ensure a secure and compliant work environment. This role involves developing and implementing safety policies, conducting regular inspections and audits, and ensuring adherence to safety regulations and standards. The Safety Operation Superintendent will lead incident investigations, provide safety training, and promote a culture of safety across the organization. Key responsibilities include managing safety compliance, emergency preparedness, and maintaining accurate safety records. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in occupational health and safety, excellent communication skills, and the ability to drive safety improvements.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve safety policies, procedures, and training programs to ensure compliance with local, state, and regulations.
- Perform regular safety inspections and audits of facilities and job sites to identify potential hazards, ensure compliance with safety standards, and recommend corrective actions.
- Lead investigations into workplace incidents and accidents, analyse root causes, and implement corrective measures to prevent future occurrences.
- Create and deliver safety training sessions and educational materials for employees at all levels, ensuring understanding and adherence to safety practices and emergency procedures.
- Stay updated on changes in safety regulations and standards, ensure the organization’s compliance, and prepare and submit required reports and documentation.
- Develop and oversee emergency response plans, conduct regular drills, and ensure all employees are prepared to respond effectively to emergencies.
- Foster a strong safety culture by promoting safety awareness, encouraging proactive safety behaviours, and addressing safety concerns promptly.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of safety inspections, incident reports, training activities, and compliance documentation.
- Work closely with management, supervisors, and employees to provide guidance on safety-related issues, support the implementation of safety measures, and address any safety concerns.
- Ensure the proper use and maintenance of safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) and make recommendations for improvements as needed.
- Plan and conduct internal safety audits to ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements and prepare audit reports with actionable recommendations.
- Monitoring compliance with management system standards (i.e., ISM Code, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001).
- Encouraging and promoting best practice throughout the company’s operations.
- Maintain awareness and knowledge of Benchmarking; Best in Class Performance to ensure long term business competitiveness.
- Fulfil the Health & Safety responsibilities as identified in the Responsibilities and Accountabilities section of the Health & Safety Program.
Qualification and Education:
Bachelor’s degree in safety or similar field.
Experience:
- A minimum of 8 years of experience in the specific industry or sector as it provides familiarity with relevant safety standards and regulations.
- Prior experience in a supervisory or managerial role related to safety is beneficial.
- Experience managing safety on large projects or multiple sites can be valuable, especially for roles in larger organizations or projects with complex safety requirements.
- Experience with safety management software and tools for tracking incidents, inspections, and compliance.
Skills:
- Knowledge of Safety Regulations: In-depth understanding of OSHA regulations, local and safety standards, and industry-specific safety requirements.
- Ability to identify, evaluate, and mitigate safety hazards through risk assessments and safety audits.
- Skills in conducting thorough investigations into workplace incidents, analysing root causes, and recommending corrective actions.
- Proficiency in developing and implementing emergency response plans, conducting drills, and managing crisis situations.
- Strong problem-solving abilities to address safety issues, develop solutions, and implement corrective actions.
- Meticulous attention to detail for conducting inspections, maintaining records, and ensuring compliance with safety standards.
- Ability to analyse safety data and trends to identify areas for improvement and measure the effectiveness of safety programs.
- Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills to deliver safety training, report on safety issues, and interact with employees and regulatory agencies.
- Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with employees at all levels, manage safety committees, and resolve safety-related conflicts.
- Ability to lead and motivate teams, manage safety personnel, and foster a culture of safety within the organization.
- Skills in developing and delivering safety training programs and providing guidance and support to employees on safety practices.
- Capability to manage multiple safety projects and initiatives simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency in maintaining accurate and organized safety records, documentation, and reports.
Professional Certifications:
Relevant certifications (such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Occupational Health and Safety Technician (OHST), or similar. can be required or highly desirable and may impact the level of experience needed.
