Description

We solicit applications for experienced Agronomists for Professor Himanshu Mishra’s research Group in King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia (https://interfaciallab.kaust.edu.sa).

Expectations

Our goal is to enhance the sustainability of growing food crops and native trees in the desert environment of Saudi Arabia. This necessitates an amalgamation of knowledge and experience in agronomy, soil science, engineering methods, and precision agriculture in semi- and hyper-arid regions. Specifically, we will be testing the effects of soil amendment technologies pioneered by our laboratory for boosting water-use efficiency (Superhydrophobic Sand mulch, SandX) and nutrient-uptake efficiency (biochar). We seek agronomists with practical experience and knowledge in growing trees/bushes/shrubs in hot and dry regions. Consideration will also be given to those with experience in horticulture, agricultural engineering, and soil chemistry. Successful candidates will contribute to our translational research in collaboration with stakeholders in the Kingdom and beyond. The applicant should have:

  • Practical experience in large-scale field preparation, precision agriculture, fertilizer dosing, soil management, pest control, plant health, and smart irrigation.
  • Rapidly test hypotheses via pot-scale studies and implement in the field.
  • Deploy smart-irrigation systems to maximize irrigation efficiency; soil management to maximize nutrient-use efficiency.
  • Sensors for soil characterization – pH, water content, temperature, ion-exchange, and mass transport of gases/water, etc.
  • Phenotyping of plant traits to pinpoint the effects of various factors/treatments.
  • Go getter, doer, problem solver, excited to work in the field, & team player.
