Overview:
We are looking for a Wood Painting Specialist who can both perform hands-on finishing work and provide leadership to the painting department. This role combines expert execution on a variety of wood substrates (solid wood, veneer, MDF, etc.) and metal surfaces (including stainless steel) with guiding, training, and supervising team members. The successful candidate will drive high-quality standards, innovate new finishes, and stay informed about the latest industry technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
Hands-On Painting & Finishing:
- Prepare and finish wood surfaces using PU, acrylic, water-based, and other coating systems.
- Mix paints accurately (including computer-based color matching) and apply finishes by spray, brush, or roll.
- Execute specialty techniques (antique, distressed, patina, hand-stained) and ensure defect-free results.
Supervision & Team Development:
- Lead, mentor, and train the painting team in proper application methods, safety protocols, and best practices.
- Assign tasks, monitor progress, and maintain workflow efficiency while upholding quality standards.
- Evaluate team performance, identify skill gaps, and implement training programs to enhance capabilities.
Quality Control & Process Improvement:
- Inspect finished products for defects (bubbling, fisheyes, color inconsistencies) and promptly implement corrective measures.
- Develop preventive action plans to reduce errors and standardize finishing processes.
- Maintain detailed records of product formulations and continually refine techniques for consistency and quality.
Equipment & Technology:
- Remain up-to-date with cutting-edge painting systems, tools, and industry innovations.
- Calibrate and maintain spray booths, mixers, and other painting equipment to optimize performance.
- Recommend and implement new technologies or processes that enhance finish quality and efficiency.
Safety & Compliance:
- Enforce safety regulations for handling paints, solvents, and hazardous materials (including VOC compliance).
- Promote a culture of safety and cleanliness in the painting area.
- Ensure proper labeling, storage, and disposal of all finishing materials.
Qualifications & Requirements:
Experience & Education:
- Minimum of 5–7 years in wood finishing, with hands-on expertise in various coating systems and specialty finishes.
- Previous supervisory or team leadership experience is strongly preferred.
Technical Skills:
- Mastery of paint chemistry (PU, acrylic, water-based), precise mixing ratios, and computer-based color matching.
- Proven track record in creating innovative finishes, including antique, distressed, and patina effects.
- Ability to troubleshoot defects, adjust processes, and maintain consistent high-quality output.
Leadership & Communication:
- Strong interpersonal skills for coaching, mentoring, and directing team members.
- Effective communicator with the ability to collaborate cross-functionally and train staff at all levels.
Continuous Improvement Mindset:
- Demonstrated ability to implement process enhancements that boost efficiency and quality.
- Willingness to research and adopt emerging painting technologies and techniques.
Physical & Safety Requirements:
- Capable of handling, moving, and working with painting materials and equipment for extended periods.
- Commitment to proper PPE usage and adherence to all safety regulations.
