Overall, Job Purpose

The role holder is responsible for managing the monthly general ledger closing and preparation of the financial statements for the respective SBU / affiliate in compliance with the Maaden policies, procedures and guidelines.

Core Responsibilities And Accountabilities

  • Prepare the month-end GL closing plan in line with Ma’aden accounting and internal control policies and procedures, and get necessary approval from the GL & FS Director
  • Manage the monthly, quarterly and year-end general ledger closing activities for the respective SBU / affiliate, in coordination with the GL & FS Director, by opening the new accounting period for each sub-ledger before the month-end, coordinating with sub-ledger owners to ensure completion of key activities as per month-end closing plan, posting all journals entries created while running the interface, reviewing the adjustment entries and reconciliations prepared by the Accountants, and finally reviewing the prepared trial balance before sharing it with GL & FS Director.
  • Review financial statement templates and the financial statements (both English and Arabic) developed by Accountants for the respective SBU / affiliate and make necessary updates, before sharing with GL & FS Director, External Reporting Department and External Auditors
  • Develop the GL budget for his/her respective SBU / affiliate and share with GL & FS director for consolidation
  • Monitor SBU / affiliate's expenses against budget and investigate/justify significant variances
  • Contribute to the requirements of internal and external auditors as per the directions of the GL& FS Director
  • Contribute to the timely resolution of the issues raised through an internal or external audit, in coordination with the Audit Engagement Advisor
  • Monitor existing accounting policies, procedures and systems and assist in the development and implementation of new systems, policies and procedures to meet changing requirements (e.g. compliance with IFRS regulations) and future needs of the business
  • Contribute to the preparation of Financial Accounting-related reports to management, auditors, etc.
  • Provide accounting assistance to project managers and operations staff and respond to financial questions/concerns to meet business needs, in case the Accountants cannot meet the requirements
  • Resolve any issues escalated by GL Accountants regarding the fulfilment of specific business needs
  • Ensure specific needs of their respective SBU / affiliate are catered to, and escalate any unresolved issues to the GL & FS Director

I. General Managerial Responsibilities And Accountabilities

  • Contribute to a working environment and culture which engages all Financial Accounting staff
  • Develop and coach junior staff to retain and expand talent through focused attention and effort
  • Ensure employees are adequately coached and trained in line with the requirements of their role
  • Contribute to the performance management and appraisal of employees and ensure the timeliness and fairness of the process
  • Participate in the identification, assessment and recruitment of potential employees
  • Monitor and push the Financial Accounting function for innovation, thereby continually enhancing quality and reducing cost by streamlining processes, procedures and automation
  • Ensure adoption/compliance with world-class trends and best practices in Financial Accounting to ultimately drive cost reduction and quality enhancement
  • Report to GL& FS Director periodically on key operational KPIs
  • Submit to GL & FS Director and above on a regular and ad hoc basis, input for business planning and operational improvements

II. Self-Management Responsibilities And Accountabilities

  • Define performance goals at the start of the year in discussion with the GL & FS Director
  • Monitor work quality and escalate any operational issues promptly
  • Keep abreast of professional developments, new techniques and current issues through continued education and professional growth

I. Internal

Communications & Working Relationships:

  • Report to GL & FS Director
  • Maintain a healthy working environment within the respective SBU / affiliate team of Accountants.
  • Coordinate/collaborate with Accountants to resolve escalated operational issues and deliver efficient services.
  • Manage internal customer relationships (e.g. resolving issues related to sub-ledger closing, reconciliations) including resolving any escalated issues.
  • Regularly oversee any relevant subordinate team staff for quality and efficiency

II. External

  • Manage external customer relationships (e.g. interacting with the External Auditor), including resolving any escalated issues.

Job Relevant Information (Boundaries & Decision-Making Authority)

  • Plans & supervises all Financial Accounting activities at the respective SBU / affiliate, as per established policies & procedures.
  • Will resolve any issues escalated by Accountants arising during the provision of services, as per established policies & standard operating procedures.
  • Will report any unresolved issues to the GL & FS Director for discussion and approval of recommended actions.
  • Proposes updates (as necessary) to relevant shared services strategies and accounting policies within Ma’aden as per best practices and overall Ma’aden business strategies.
  • Ensures that Accountant staff receive the required training based on their evaluations.
  • Provides actionable recommendations in the recruitment, selection, transfer and promotion of GL personnel within Ma’aden.
  • Participates in required trainings as assigned by the GL & FS Director

I. Qualifications

Qualifications, Experience & Skills:

  • Bachelor's level degree in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent from an internationally recognised institution
  • A master’s degree is preferred.
  • Professional Certification: CMA, CPA, ACCA, ACA, CA, CFA or equivalent preferred

II. Experience

  • At least 10 years of relevant experience in General Ledger and Financial Accounting
  • Experience with IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards)
  • Experience with large Finance / Accounting ERP systems.

III. Skills

  • Strong personal computer and business solutions software skills (e.g. MS Office, MS Excel, MS Word)
  • Strong managerial and interpersonal skills for interacting with accountants, clients, and upper management.
  • Strong communication skills are required for communicating with support personnel and management.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Good planning and organizational skills are needed to balance and priorities work.
