Basic Function

To provide specialized services for the diagnosis and management of patients with heart disease and specifically to provide an interventional service for tachy and brady arrhythmias.


Scope

The Interventional Electrophysiologist is a staff member of the Cardiology Services Division of the Medical Operations Department. His responsibilities are divided between the outpatient cardiology clinics, cardiovascular unit and inpatient services. He will be expected to perform all basic aspects of general cardiology, including the management of patients with unstable angina and acute coronary syndromes, congestive heart failure, valvular disease. In addition to these basic functions, he will be expected to interpret electrocardiograms, holter monitors and stress tests including both exercise and pharmacological stress tests. He will work under the professional supervision of the Chief of Cardiology Services Division, and he must actively participate in all the clinical activities of the division, as well as the educational, quality assurance and peer review activities. He will be expected to perform procedures, particularly diagnostic, both simple and complex electrophysiology Studies, ablation, device implants including pacemaker, Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator, Cardiac resynchronization therapy and Implantable loop recorder .


Principal Contacts

The Interventional Electrophysiologist will be in daily contact with his patients, particularly their families as well as nurses, cardiovascular technologists, catheterization laboratory staff as well as other members of the Cardiology Services Division. In addition, he may be in contact with the internists and other subspecialties of the Internal Medicine Services Division as well as the Surgical Services Division if requested to do so on consultation. He will also be consulted by the members of the Ambulatory Services Division including General Practitioners (family physicians) and internists both from Dhahran Health Center and the districts.

Principal Duties

  1. To perform professional duties of a Cardiologist in accordance with the delineation of privileges as recommended by the Chief of the Cardiology Services Division, and was approved by the Credentials Committee.
  2. To provide outpatient evaluation of patients with cardiovascular diseases.
  3. To provide care to his inpatients in Coronary Care Unit and Telemetry Unit, as well as on other wards.
  4. To perform cardiac procedures which might include non-invasive procedures such as supervising or interpreting both exercise and pharmacological stress tests and myoview or thallium scans, EKG interpretation, Holter monitor interpretation, routine transthoracic echo Doppler studies.
  5. To provide consultation services, as requested, for inpatients in the area of his expertise.
  6. To share in the on call duty of the general Cardiology Services Division according to operational need. During his call he will be expected to respond to requests for assistance from the emergency rooms both at Dhahran Health Center and the districts, including Ras Tanura, Abqaiq, Udhailiyah, Al Hasa and Tanajib. He may also be consulted by other specialists after working hours to provide emergency consultation for the Internal Medicine Services Division and Surgical Services Division. He will be expected to take cases for interventional cardiology as per operational need.
  7. He will be expected to participate in the monthly staff meeting of the Cardiology Services Division.
  8. He will attend any mandatory meetings of the Division, particularly the Cardiac Catheterization Conference.
  9. He must contribute to the educational activities of the Division, including Grand Rounds, Journal Clubs as well as contribute to the education or professional development of other health care professionals in contact with the Cardiology Services Division, particularly Cardiovascular Technicians, Cath Lab personnel, Professional Development Physicians and Cardiology Staff Physicians.
  10. He will provide medical reports as requested in a timely and professional manner.
  11. The Interventional Electrophysiologist will be expected to perform diagnostic electrophysiology procedure simple and complex ablation, device implant including implantable cardioverter defibrillator , Cardiac resynchronization therapy , Pacemaker and Implantable loop recorder .
  12. The Interventional Electrophysiologist will also be expected to develop and sustain a high quality EP Program at Dhahran Health Center. This would involve working with and contributing to the education of the Cath Lab staff and Cardiologists. As part of this function, ongoing contribution to the cardiac catheterization database and QI activities is mandatory.
  • Experience

    • Minimum of two years practice in the field of interventional electrophysiology following successful completion of fellowship.
    • Proof of expertise, current privileging, and safe to practice in interventional cardiology including performance of Percutaneous coronary intervention /stenting independently.
  • Certifications/Other requirements as applicable

    • Must hold a valid license to practice medicine in his home country and must be eligible for a license to practice as a specialist in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
    • Excellent command of verbal and written English as well as ability to adjust to working in a group practice of cardiology in a multicultural environment.
    • Must be able to work as a team member.
