Basic Function
Otolaryngologists are physicians specialized in the medical and surgical treatment of patients with diseases and disorders of the ear, nose, throat (ENT), and related structures of the head and neck.
Scope
Otolaryngologists’ special skills include diagnosing and managing diseases of the ear, nose and throat, and structures of the head and neck and face, in both children and adults.
Clinician functions individually, and as a member of the ENT division, providing the full range of diagnostic care for all disorders of the ear, nose, and throat and head and neck regions, as appropriate, with medical treatment and surgical intervention being the active modalities of care. Pathology includes, but is not limited to, congenital, developmental, infectious or inflammatory, neoplastic, and traumatic presentations of the ear, nose, and throat and head and neck regions.
Clinician practices under the administrative and clinical supervision of the Division Chief and may be responsible for the evaluation and supervision of physicians in training assigned to the Division. Standards of care are in accord with those established by JHAH, which have been designed to meet the requirements of the Joint Commission International Accreditation (JCIA) and CBHI (CBHI).
Education
- Graduation from an approved medical school.
- Board Certification by the AB of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, or the Canadian Royal College of Physicians or equivalent.
- One year of internship in a recognized training program.
- Five years of residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in a recognized training program.
- Fellowship training (1 or 2 years as applicable) in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery in a recognized training program in cochlear implant subspecialty.
- Must hold a valid license to practice medicine.
Experience
- At least 2 or more years of exclusive practice of Otorhinolaryngology after Board certification or after completion of a fellowship of one or two years in one of the above mentioned eight subspecialty areas.
- At the recommendation of the Chief of Service, in lieu of the two-year fellowship, at least 10 years of experience in a subspecialty with proven and excellent work track record.
- In the UK system, at least three years of training as a registrar or senior registrar jobs in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
Principal Contacts.
Has daily contact with patients, family members, staff, nurses, allied health professionals, administrators and physicians.
Principal Duties:
- Provides person-centered care and consultations to inpatients and outpatients in the area of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
- Provides diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in accordance with the highest standards of care and within the delineation of privileges as recommended by the Chief of the Division and approved by the JHAH Credentialing and Privileging Committee.
- Completes all medical documentation and reports in a timely and professional manner.
- Develops collegial relationships and works collaboratively other physicians, nurses, allied health providers and administrators across departments and districts at JHAH. Actively participates as a member of multi-disciplinary teams and is a team player.
- Shares in the on-call responsibilities according to operational need. Responds to emergency requests for assistance from the emergency rooms at all JHAH facilities.
- Actively participates in the monthly Unit, Division, Department and Hospital staff, clinical, education and research meetings.
- Contributes to the educational activities of the Division, by attending Grand Rounds, Journal Clubs and fosters the education or professional development of trainees or other health care professionals.
- Participates in interdisciplinary, interdepartmental and performance and quality improvement activities including committee service within JHAH.
- Promptly responds to all JHAH queries regarding medical documentation, coding, patient concerns, or risk management.
- Participates in the development and implementation of administrative policies, medical practice procedures, clinical guidelines, and standard operating.
