The EH&S Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing environmental, health, and safety programs and policies to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and promote a safe working environment. This role involves conducting risk assessments, training employees, and collaborating with various departments to enhance safety practices.
Essential Functions
- Regulatory Compliance: Monitor and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal EHS regulations and standards. Prepare and submit necessary documentation and reports to regulatory agencies.
- Risk Assessment: Conduct regular audits and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and evaluate the effectiveness of existing safety measures. Develop strategies to mitigate identified risks and implement corrective actions.
- Training and Education: Design and deliver EHS training programs for employees, including new hire orientation, safety drills, and specialized training on hazardous materials. Foster a culture of safety by promoting awareness and understanding of EHS policies and procedures.
- Incident Investigation: Investigate workplace incidents and accidents, analyze root causes, and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Maintain records of incidents and prepare reports for management review.
- Program Development: Develop, implement, and maintain EHS programs, policies, and procedures. Collaborate with management and employees to establish safety objectives and performance metrics.
- Emergency Preparedness: Assist in the development and implementation of emergency response plans and procedures. Conduct drills and evaluate the effectiveness of emergency response efforts.
- Data Management: Maintain and analyze EHS data and statistics to track safety performance and identify trends. Prepare and present reports to management on EHS performance and initiatives.
- Collaboration: Work closely with other departments, including operations, human resources, and facilities management, to promote a safe work environment. Serve as a point of contact for EHS-related inquiries and concerns.
- Continuous Improvement: Stay current with industry trends, best practices, and regulatory changes to enhance EHS programs. Participate in professional development opportunities to improve skills and knowledge in EHS management.
- Security Oversight: Collaborate with the security department to ensure compliance with all safety and security protocols. Participate in regular security audits and assessments to identify potential risks and vulnerabilities.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Strong knowledge of EH&S local regulations and best practices.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and EH&S management software.
- A bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, Engineering, or a related field; alternatively, a diploma in Environmental Health and Safety accompanied by 5 years of experience for diploma holders, or 3 years of experience for those with a bachelor’s degree.
