Specialist, Metallurgical

Role Summary: The Specialist Metallurgical will provide technical expertise in the selection, testing, and treatment of metals and alloys to ensure optimal performance in manufacturing and product development. This role requires a strong understanding of metallurgical principles, materials science, and industry standards.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

• Conduct detailed metallurgical analysis of metals, alloys, and other materials to assess chemical composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties.
• Utilize techniques such as optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), hardness testing, and spectroscopy to evaluate material integrity.
• Investigate material failures in components and structures to determine root causes.
• Recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence of failures in manufacturing, construction, or operational processes.
• Collaborate with production and engineering teams to optimize metallurgical processes (e.g., heat treatment, welding, alloying).
• Ensure adherence to quality standards and regulatory requirements for materials and processes.
• Support development of new alloys, coatings, and material treatments to meet specific engineering requirements.
• Conduct experiments to validate theoretical predictions and improve material performance.
• Prepare detailed technical reports on testing results, failure analysis, and material recommendations.
• Maintain accurate laboratory records and ensure traceability of materials tested.
• Ensure all testing and metallurgical practices comply with relevant industry standards, safety regulations, and company procedures.
• Stay updated on advancements in metallurgical science, materials engineering, and industry best practices.
• Provide expert advice to engineering, maintenance, and production teams on material selection, heat treatment, corrosion prevention, and mechanical performance.
• Participate in cross-functional teams for problem-solving and continuous improvement initiatives.

Education & Experience:

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Surface Engineering, or a related field. A Masters or Ph.D. in a relevant field is a plus.
• Proven experience in metallurgical analysis, materials testing, and process improvement.
• Proficiency in laboratory techniques such as optical microscopy, SEM, XRD, hardness testing, and tensile testing.
• Strong knowledge of heat treatment, corrosion mechanisms, and welding metallurgy.
• Familiarity with quality management systems and ISO/ASTM standards.
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.

Skills:

• Experience with advanced materials characterization tools and software.
• Knowledge of failure analysis software and techniques.
• Project management experience in metallurgical projects.
