Join a professional maritime navigation team as a Second Officer on board our fleet of vessels. This role is responsible for safe navigation, bridge watchkeeping, passage planning, cargo and ballast support, safety management, and bridge resource coordination. The Second Officer will report to the Chief Officer and Master, maintain navigational readiness, and support the vessel’s compliance with international and company standards.

Primary Responsibilities for Second Officer - navigation, watchkeeping, safety

  • The role of the Dynamic Positioning Operator is to assist the Senior Dynamic Positioning Operator to ensure safe and efficient management of DP operations.

  • The Dynamic Positioning Operator reports directly to the Senior Dynamic Positioning Operator.

  • Competence and training as required for Dynamic Positioning Operators as per IMCA and other industry guidance.

  • The Second Officer is responsible to the Chief Officer for routine duties but directly to the Master for the Navigation of the vessel. His Navigational duties include:

    • Keeping a safe navigation watch at sea.

    • The maintenance and correction of all charts (as per the folio maintained onboard) and nautical publications carried by the ship. All navigation data is prepared for the safe navigation of the ship in the form of a fully complete Passage Plan. This includes, but is not limited to courses to steer, tidal information, navigational warnings, weather forecasts and any other information that may be relevant to the safe navigation of the ship.

    • Ensuring all charts/ ENC’s are up to date, are correctly filed in the appropriate folio and all cancelled charts are marked and removed for the active folio and stored outside the bridge. He is also to ensure that the charts for the next voyage and the likely trading areas of the vessel are on board and corrected up to the latest Notices to Mariners / Navigation warnings.

    • In the event the ship has not received Notices to Mariners for more than one week, the Second Officer must advise the Master immediately who will then inform the Operations Department, copied to the DPA/HSEQA Department.

    • In the event of any failure of the Chart and Publications management and corrections system, the Second Officer is to inform the Master who will immediately inform the Company.

    • That a list of all charts/ENC’s and nautical publications held onboard is made and kept up to date. To advise the Master when new charts and publications are required and to monitor the supply of Notices to Mariners or updates via other systems (where applicable). To inform the Master if Notices to Mariners or other updates fail to arrive as scheduled and report any deficiencies in the updating system.

    • The planning of passages and ensuring that the Master authorizes all routes and passages prior to sailing.

    • Regularly establishing the vessels position by GPS, visual or celestial navigation.

    • The maintenance of all navigational aids, gyro, and radar, GPS, magnetic compass, sounding lead, Morse light, ALDIS lamp, flags, navigation lights (main and emergency) and any other navigational equipment carried on board. The Second Officer is responsible for all this equipment being in good working order and for ensuring the required numbers of each item are on board with appropriate spares as stipulated in the "safety equipment" and "safety radio" surveys.

    • Ensuring GMDSS and other communication equipment is in working condition. Maintaining a proper radio watch and recording the relevant information into the GMDSS Logbook, which must be counter-signed every day by the Master

  • Assisting the Chief Officer with the supervision and familiarization of activities when the vessel is in port.

  • Assist Master for maintaining the vessel’s medical stores to the required levels (except where the ship has a dedicated Medical Officer). The medical locker is to be kept secured and the Ship Captain’s Medical Guide is to be readily available & consulted. Any injury or illness case that is beyond the scope of treatment onboard must be immediately referred to the nearest source of medical advice.

  • Ensuring that Muster Lists are maintained up to date in accordance with statutory requirements.

  • If the ship does not have a Third Officer, assist Master to prepare port formality papers which includes crew certificate and documentation for port inwards and outward clearances.

  • If the ship does not have a Third Officer, the Second Officer will assist the Chief Officer in the maintenance and upkeep of the ship’s LSA/FFA and security equipment.

Required Qualifications - certification, experience, medical fitness

  • Certificate of Competency as per STCW reg II/3.

  • STCW endorsements

  • Valid Medical certificate

  • DP Unlimited License

  • DP experience as per IMCA M 117

  • Minimum 6 months of experience in rank and similar type of vessel.

Preferred Skills - advanced navigation, sector experience, leadership

  • Experience with AHTS, tanker, offshore support, or energy-sector vessel operations, including tanker cargo procedures, cargo watch duties, and stability management.

  • Training or certification in advanced navigation, radar/ARPA proficiency courses, bridge team management, or advanced GMDSS operatorship is advantageous.

  • Demonstrated ability to use electronic chart systems, voyage planning tools, and bridge automation to enhance situational awareness and safety.

  • Strong communication, decision-making, and supervisory skills with the ability to mentor junior officers and support cohesive bridge team operations.

Work Environment & Conditions - seafaring life, rotations, safety
  • Seagoing position with rotational deployments; assignments may include extended periods onboard with defined on/off rotation schedules.

  • Work in offshore, port, and confined-space environments; ability to operate safely around moving machinery, at heights, and during inclement weather when required.

  • Must comply with medical fitness standards, vaccinations, and company pre-employment screening requirements.
