Expert (m/f/d) – Old Masters (Paintings)

Job Description:

More than 300 years after its foundation Dorotheum is by far the largest auction house in the German-speaking world, a leader in Central Europe and also one of the oldest and largest auction houses in the world. Our international expansion through our branches and representative offices in Europe has contributed to our recent successes.

With around 700 auctions a year, spanning more than 40 categories and over 100 experts, we inspire our customers with our passion for art and our love of unique pieces from private collections. We are characterized by tradition and unique expertise with personal service.

For our locations in downtown Vienna, Hamburg, Munich, Düsseldorf, Milan, and Brussels, we are looking for a dedicated professional to join our Old Masters/Fine Arts department as:

Your new responsibility:

• Client Acquisition & Management: You will secure high-calibre consignments for our auctions, manage our valued existing clients, and actively build relationships with new clients.
• Expertise & Valuation: You will independently evaluate art objects (both online and on-site) and organise high-profile valuation days, including at our international branches.
• Cataloguing & Documentation: You will undertake the scholarly cataloguing and description of items and produce precise condition reports in English.
• Auction Operations: You will actively support the preparation and execution of our auctions.
• Market Development: You will closely monitor the international art market and contribute to the further development of the Fine Art Department.
  
  

Your experience and competencies:

• Education: A degree in Art History specialising in European painting (15th to 18th centuries) or a comparable, well-founded qualification.
• Experience: Demonstrable experience in the international art market (auction house, gallery, or high-end art dealership), as well as in-depth knowledge of Old Master paintings.
• Personality: Highly self-motivated, with a strong sense of responsibility, a goal-oriented approach to work, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• Customer Focus: Enjoyment of client service, strong business development skills, and a confident, discreet manner when dealing with buyers and consignors.
• Languages & Flexibility: Fluency in English is essential; knowledge of Italian and German would be an advantage.
• IT & Mobility: Proficiency in standard IT systems and possession of a Class B driving licence round off your profile.
