Summary


This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Field Organization Cotton Gin Unit in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Responsibilities



  • Operate, maintain, make alterations, and improve the conventional and experimental, full-scale and small-scale saw-and-roller ginning machinery as instructed by engineers and researchers.

  • Install new equipment and make modifications to existing equipment as instructed, ensuring that all machinery is in good and safe operating condition.

  • Operate shop tools such as drill presses, band saws, grinders, hand powered tools, hand tools, and stick and MIG welders and cutting torches.

  • Support research testing, handle cotton, perform sample weighing and processing, and perform miscellaneous activities in support of research.

  • Participate with staff in the fabrication, modification, assembly, and installation of experimental equipment in support of the research.

Physical Effort


Work requires stooping, bending, reaching, crawling on machines, climbing ladders and platforms, and working from a prone position while operating and adjusting various machines. The work frequently requires walking or standing for prolonged periods and lifting, pushing, and pulling loads that occasionally exceed 50 pounds in weight.


Working Conditions


Most work is performed inside heated and ventilated shop and laboratory areas. Work is exposed to noise, dirt, dust, cotton lint, and drafts and to physical hazards from powered tools and machinery, metal chips, snags, and welding and cutting equipment. Occasional outside work may be subject to dust or prevailing weather conditions. Some tasks require wearing personal protective equipment, such as welding helmets, aprons, safety glasses, dust masks, ear protection, and hard hats. Safety rules and protocols must be observed. Safety concerns are raised and discussed with the supervisor.
