A Public Safety Security Officer has unique and specific responsibilities. Officers are responsible for patrolling the entire campus by foot, bicycle, vehicle, or fixed post to ensure the security, safety, and welfare of the Gwynedd Mercy University community, its guests, and visitors. This position is classified as essential, full-time, temporary 40 hours per week, rotational schedule including possible weekends. The Security Officer is expected to be on campus when scheduled regardless of whether the University is closed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Provide or facilitates in providing a clear, safe, quiet and secure environment for all. Performs security duties either at a fixed post, or while making rounds of University buildings and grounds.

Checks for unauthorized persons, general security violations, or safety hazards.

Reports all problems and emergencies to immediate supervisor and documents incidents with a written report.

Verifies the appropriateness of persons on University campus. Checks ID badges and ensures that employees and students are permitted in appropriate buildings. Ensures that visitors comply with visiting regulations and schedules.

Provides security services, which includes patrol of campus buildings and grounds on foot, includes climbing steps, driving a vehicle, or a bicycle and performing security checks as needed, gives directions, provides escorts, provides first aid, locks and unlocks doors/facilities as required or authorized.

Provides escorts with service and friendly demeanor in order to reinforce comfort level. - Issues tickets and regulates campus vehicle and pedestrian traffic to enhance safety and expedite traffic flow.

Diffuses any difficult situation with conflict resolution skills.

Provides security services during special events such as Commencement, Open Houses, University weekend events, sporting events, social functions, etc.

Reports any incident that seems unusual/deficient to immediate supervisor as necessary.

Monitors access into the Residence Halls and responds to fire and security alarms.

In conjunction with the Lower Gwynedd Township Police Department, Officers may investigate on campus criminal offenses and provides support to victims of crime.

Enforces parking regulations throughout the university. Issues tickets and regulates campus vehicle and pedestrian traffic to enhance safety and expedite traffic flow. Notifies supervisor to call for tow truck and/or police services as may be necessary.

Submits written reports as required and contributes information essential to the effective operation and management of the Public Safety Department.

Responds to emergency situations including but not limited to: security and phone activated alarms, fire alarms, evacuations, illnesses and injuries, in a timely manner. Responds to calls from employees or supervisors of employees who are injured on the job.

Maintains daily patrol log. Documents all safety/security actions taken during a tour of duty. Makes entry on patrol log at least once every 15 minutes. Submits completed log to shift supervisor at completion of tour. Documents specific incident reports including the taking of photographs.

Responds promptly and positively to students, employees, and visitors in a respectful, courteous, and confidential manner. Maintains an identifiable/professional attire at all times.

Answers telephones calls within three rings 95% of the time. Respects the confidentiality of students and co-workers in all circumstances 100% of the time. Greets students, families, co-workers, and others in a calm, professional, friendly manner by making eye contact, initiating conversation, and identifying self by name.

Supports loss prevention. As directed by shift supervisor, inspects packages brought into and taken out of any University building. Performs safety rounds and identifies deficiencies for corrective action.

Acts as an information resource to university personnel, visitors, and students.

Follows GMercyU and department policies and procedures. Attends mandatory sessions/meetings/in-services 100% of the time.

Adheres to GMercyU and department attendance policies and procedures and demonstrates knowledge and application of University and department procedures and policies.

Knowledge of dispatch systems, radio communications, fire systems, CCTV, emergency procedures, and switchboard communications.

Education and/or Experience

High School diploma or GED required. CPR/First Aid training is a requirement upon hire, previous training, and certification a plus. Ability to successfully complete a criminal background check and motor vehicle check. Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license. EMT/First Responder certification a plus

Computer Skills

Knowledge of Microsoft, Word, Excel, Computer Aided dispatch a plus

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with individuals and before small groups.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent.

Interpersonal Skills

Ability to deal effectively and professionally with others, consistent with the mission and values of the department and Gwynedd-Mercy University. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to interact with the internal and external community in a “service” oriented in the Universities core values during both non and emergency situations with the ability to gather critical information and relay to responders while coordinating emergency responders.

Reasoning Skills

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to respond effectively to emergency situations.


Uniforms, which must be worn while on duty, are provided by the University. Employee provides own black shoes and pants

Must be able to respond to emergency situations by running from one building to another.
