Technical Writer



Job Description
Organize and prepare information and data for use in a wide variety of complex technical publications requiring in-depth knowledge of the subject matter and allied fields. Recommend overall organization and layout, mode of presentation, publication methods, and the like. Develop publications concept for best communication of subject matter. Recommend editorial standards. Review technical literature prepared by other staff members for content, coverage, and clarity. Proficient in writing user manuals, user guides, and all forms of end-user and support documentation within Technical Writing/Editor, Journalism, Request for Proposals, Statements of Work, Capture Management, Government, and Technology



Responsibilities include:

  • Transform technical jargon and designs into relatable, understandable documentation for the intended audience.

  • Plan, develop, organize, write and edit operational procedures and manuals

  • Research, develop and document technical design specifications and test scripts

  • Produce electronic documentation

  • Analyze documents to maintain continuity of style of content

  • Manage updates and revisions to technical literature

  • Develops a thorough understanding of the audience and the documentation required by meeting with colleagues, and working with managers

  • Researches and builds knowledge about technology or concepts to be documented

  • Determines the clearest and most logical way to present information and instructions for greatest reader comprehension and writes and edits technical information accordingly

  • Prepares or commissions graphics and illustrations to elaborate on or complement technical writing

  • Meets with subject matter experts in order to ensure that specialized topics are appropriately addressed and discussed

  • Revises, edits, or updates instructions, technical information, and frequently asked questions as necessary

  • Creates, adapts, and follows project schedules and deadlines




Basic Qualifications



  • 1-3 years of experience with government technical writing

  • 1-3 years of experience with training material verification and editing

  • Knowledge of Navy training and technical writing standards desired

  • Secret clearance

  • BA or BS degree and 3 years of experience with technical writing for the DoD




Additional Qualifications



  • Knowledge of MIL-STD-40051, MIL-HDBK-1222, and eXtensible Markup Language

  • Ability to maintain accurate technical publications

  • Ability to develop multiple technical publications.

  • Ability to show expertise in Adobe Acrobat, Frame Maker, and Microsoft Office

  • Possession of excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Proven experience working in a technical writing position

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Proficiency in MS Office

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Skilled at prioritization and multi-tasking

  • Ability to Explain Concepts Clearly

  • Planning and Organization
