Summary: The Rolling Mill Supervisor position is responsible for the direct supervision of the rolling mill a the Lackawanna, NY facility wherein this person shall assure the achievement of designated productivity, yield, cost, quality and safety goals.

Essential duties and responsibilities which must be performed in order to carry out the position purpose summarized above:

  • Schedule, plan and implement daily mill and mill maintenance activities. Coordinate mill changes, assign and monitor staff to minimize downtime and assure continuous operations. Assure proper flow and location of materials.

  • Supervise staff: train, schedule and assign employees, including managing time off; monitor and document performance. Assure adherence to the labor contract.

  • Post, award, and authorize overtime, approve time cards, and process and assure accuracy of payroll.

  • Assure quality of bars, inspection of defects, and resolution of defects.

  • Review previous turn activity and maintenance issues; take appropriate action, as required.

  • Track, plan, and update reports daily as preparation for the next shift.

  • Supervise scheduled repairs and respond to unscheduled repair requests. This also includes tracking maintenance delays, writing and distributing work orders, and follow-up for each matter.

  • Coordinate with outside contractors as needed.

  • Implement safety policies and procedures; make safety contacts and maintain safety records. Distribute safety equipment.

  • Observe, report, and address any unsafe conditions or accidents. Complete accident reports.

  • Supervise general housekeeping of area and equipment.

  • Assure conformance to quality and environmental regulations.

  • Participate in special projects as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Specific knowledge, training or skills required to perform the duties of this position. Specific concepts, courses, training programs or required certifications:

  • In-depth knowledge of steel rolling and related equipment (R.B.U; stand building, roller guides, loopers, shears, mill adjustments, etc.)

  • Basic mechanical and electrical maintenance skills.

  • Supervisory and leadership skills in a union environment.

  • Basic computer skills: data management and retrieval; word processing; spreadsheets, email and internet.

  • Written and oral communication skills.

  • Interpersonal skills: ability to relate to all types of people; demonstrated trust and integrity.

  • Troubleshooting and organizational skills.

  • Knowledge of EPA, OSHA, and quality regulations such as QS and TS.

Essential Physical Demands and Working Environment:

  • Very demanding position: Long hours, standing, walking, stooping, and climbing; requires physical and agility and dexterity.

  • Ability to see, communicate, hear and utilize electronic communication devices.

  • Stressful work environment.

  • Plant working conditions: hazardous, dirty and subject to weather and temperature extremes.

Previous experience that is
necessary background to qualify for this position:

  • Seasoned level of experience in the steel industry related to maintenance and rolling steel.

  • Supervisory experience in a union environment.
