The Project Book Conservator is a temporary, part-time position, reporting to the Conservation Librarian/Conservator, that will perform a variety of skilled conservation treatment on selected books from the Library's Rare Book Collection. The work includes, but is not limited to, planning treatment workflow, examining and carrying out conservation treatments, and creating written and photographic documentation before, during, and after treatment.


Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG's Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and actively helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization culture throughout the institution.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:



  • Work with NYBG Conservation Librarian/Conservator and Conservator to develop project workflow and treatment plans.

  • Examine books and perform both basic and complex conservation treatment including joint and endcap repair, rebacking, refurbishing, sewing, and paper repair.

  • Keep accurate treatment notes. Provide both full written and photographic documentation for each treatment and enter into a database.

  • Fabricate protective enclosures, such as self-closing wrappers, polyester jackets, boxes and portfolio cases.


Schedule:



  • Varied, 24 hours per week.


Requirements:



  • Master's degree in conservation or related area specializing in book and paper conservation, or equivalent combination of apprenticeship, advanced courses, internships and experience; MLS or equivalent degree preferred.

  • Minimum of five years of experience in conservation work.

  • Excellence in performing complex conservation treatments on a broad range of library and archival materials as demonstrated through a portfolio.

  • Knowledge of the tools, supplies, equipment, methods and practices appropriate for treating and housing books and paper collections.

  • Knowledge of and adherence to professional ethical practice in conservation.

  • Aptitude with MS Office and FileMaker Pro

  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to stand for long periods, to move 20+ pounds, and to work in an environment which includes exposure to materials containing possible dust and mold.
