The LRS Staff Supervisor is a full-time, entry level classified staff position intended to introduce the individual to all aspects of public service work in the LRS department, work primarily focused on circulation, building management, and student employee supervision. In the beginning this position will introduce the new staff member to all aspects of general library public service operations. There is ample room to grow, however. Over time the person in this role may take on unique functional specialties within the department as needed and depending on fit, skills, abilities, and interests. Examples of potential functional specialties include: Developing training programs for student employees; Maintaining policies and procedures for the department; Updating departmental sections of the library’s website; Assisting with the library’s integrated library system (ILS); Maintaining the inventory for the library’s technologies for checkout and procuring new items as needed; Ordering supplies for the department; and/or Providing tours and orientations to students and the public. This position reports to the Program Manger and the Head of the Department.

Duties and Responsibilities

Work at the main service desk, check library material in and out, renew materials, collect fines, and register patrons.

Supervise LRS student employees during appointed LRS service point shifts.

Participate in semester evaluation and performance reviews of LRS student employees.

Answer telephone and in-person patron queries, explain policies and procedures, and make appropriate referrals.

During the summer, perform all the duties associated with closing the library Sunday – Thursday (the library generally closes at 9 p.m.)

Serve as back-up library closer Sunday – Thursday on an as needed basis.

Train along-side other classified staff in the LRS department in the basics of their functional specialties, and with departmental librarians for future provision of library tours, orientations, and workshops.

Serve on library committees and working groups.

Other duties as assigned to assist in general library operations and fulfillment of LRS mission, goals, and objectives.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

One year of post-secondary education–or–experience in higher education either as a student or employee and experience working in a high-volume customer service position–or–an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

Experience working in a high-volume customer service position.

Experience handling sensitive and confidential matters with discretion.

Experience with computers, mobile devices, printers, scanners, copiers, flash drives, and common programs, and basic hardware troubleshooting.

Demonstrated experience with a variety of common computer desktop and online software/applications, including Microsoft Office products.

Previous experience working in a public or academic library, particularly in a public service role.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

Ability to work the assigned hours and days of the position consistently and over time.

While the working hours for this position are set, the schedule for classified staff in the LRS department changes during all intersessions and the summer due to shortened library hours accounting for decreased patron traffic. In addition, LRS classified staff may be required to flex to meet occasional vacation, sick leave, and other demands of the department.
