Position Summary

Lifeguards monitor activities and ensure the safety of swimmers at aquatic facilities, responding to emergency situations. Lifeguards participate in swimming pool/facility safety and maintenance activities.

Lifeguard-II positions work 40 hours per week in an indoor Aquatics facility.

Education, Training and Experience – minimum required to proficiently perform the job

Education / higher education
: High School diploma or equivalent

Other requirements
: Must be able to swim at least 1500 yards and tread water for several minutes (will be tested every two weeks).

Education and/or experience preferences
: Prefer prior experience as a Junior Lifeguard.

Certifications, Licenses and Registrations

Driver’s License requirement
: Infrequent Driver - Regular Driver's License Required Endorsements: none

Note - For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.

Required certifications, licenses or registrations
: Must be able to complete the following American Red Cross /Jeff Ellis & Assoc. courses: Lifeguard, Learn to Swim Instructor, CPR, AED and First Aid

Time given after hire/promotion to obtain certification or licenses

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required to proficiently perform the job

: Lifeguarding and lifesaving techniques and procedures.

: To identify hazards, unsafe behaviors, and swimmers in distress and properly address each situation, preserving life and safety.

: Ability to lift items up to 49 pounds frequently.

Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities:
Will interact with other City staff, taking direction and providing information; will interact with facility patrons and swimmers, providing direction, guidance, instruction and enforcing rules and regulations.

: Minimal-incumbent primarily carries-out instructions and follows established procedures

Budgetary/Financial/Asset accountability
: Low - Position is accountable to a Department Director or Division Manager and cannot make major decisions or obligate the City

: Lead responsibilities of peer employees.

Essential Functions

The following functions are typical for this position. The omission of specific functions does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Assists staff in performing their duties and provides training and education as required.

  • Provides input for employee evaluations, hiring, terminations and disciplinary actions of area staff.

  • Oversees the work of others for assigned functions or work processes.

  • Assists with cash handling functions, to include opening and closing cash drawers.

  • Performs lifeguarding and instructional duties, warning swimmers of improper activities and hazards. Responds to emergencies, rescuing persons in distress or in danger of drowning; provides rescue breathing, CPR, AED or First Aid.

  • Follows and enforces rules and regulations, maintaining facility order and safety. Notifies management of accidents, rescues or problems.

  • Assists in facility and pool safety and maintenance activities, including grounds, lobby, bathrooms and party room. Monitors facility, including bathrooms and locker rooms, for cleanliness and supply needs. Conducts tests to determine water qualify. Maintains/completes chemical logs, hourly count logs and periodic/special reports as requested.

  • Maintains up-to-date rescue knowledge, skills, abilities and procedures in the aquatic industry.

  • Provides swim instruction to swim lesson participants at all swim levels. Plans and prepared curriculum for swim lessons.

  • Responds to questions asked by pool users.

  • Acts as deck supervisor on duty in absence of Aquatics Supervisors/Manager.

  • Maintains keys to facility for opening and closing, responsible for securing building at end of shift.

  • Directs staff on daily duties.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Daily activity level
: Frequently required to sit, kneel, stand, stop, communicate, reach and manipulate objects; walk or rove around the pool.

Physical characteristics
: Moderate to strenuous physical activity; ability lift items in excess of 49 pounds occasionally. Requires frequent use of sensory activities such as talking, seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling and depth perception to help with the recognition and identification of swimmers in distress or unsafe behaviors. Required to wear City of Rio Rancho uniforms, swimsuits and use provided safety equipment.

: Chemical exposure. Working in dangerous situations that could result in serious injury or death to self or patrons of the swimming pool.

Extraordinary working conditions
: May work in an outside environment that is subject to quick changes in environment, including rain, thunder/lightening, and hail. Bare feet; slippery surfaces; possible exposures to blood-borne pathogens

Hazardous equipment/machinery used
: Ladders; diving boards;

Required personal protective equipment
: Must keep lifesaving gear closely available at all times when guarding the pool area
