Primary Function

The Director of Greek Life plays an integral role in student life and student development by advising and overseeing all fraternity and sorority functions at the University. The purpose of this position is to advance the effectiveness of the sorority and fraternity experience and create a Greek culture that contributes to the holistic well-being and flourishing of every Greek member. The director provides training, guidance, and oversight to University-sanctioned 22 social Greek fraternities and sororities in planning, organizing, and delivering events and programs that enhance the student experience and strengthen the University’s recruitment and retention objectives. The director is responsible for understanding, interpreting, formulating, and evaluating policies and procedures related to Greek Life and student organizations, in particular the Undergraduate Social Host Policy.



The director will also oversee and coordinate a campus-wide, comprehensive hazing prevention program and will work to implement it into the life of all Greek organizations and will partner with campus colleagues to implement it into entities such as Athletics, Music, and other student organizations. The director reports to the Assistant Dean in the Dean of Students Office and serves at the deans and directors level of the on-call program.





Typical Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide day-to-day oversight, management, and advisement of all aspects of the fraternity and sorority community, which is composed of approximately ⅔ of the undergraduate student body.

  • Advise the two Greek councils on campus, the Interfraternity and Intersorority Councils, including planning and overseeing all training, weekly meetings, and annual elections.

  • Advise and oversee both councils on the two Greek recruitment periods each academic year, and work closely with all 22 Greek chapters on recruitment events to ensure compliance, equity, and inclusion.

  • Advise and approve all new member education and activities for Greek chapters.

  • Work closely with Community Standards on all Greek-related disciplinary matters, in conjunction with the EQB Guide and University policies.

  • Maintain a flexible schedule and a visible presence on campus, especially during late night events and major weekends.

  • Facilitate and maintain accurate and up-to-date records of chapter rosters, grade reports, membership dues, conduct records, and other reportable chapter data.

  • Serve as the university liaison to inter/national Greek letter organization representatives, and meet with them as appropriate (annual on-campus visits, phone calls, virtual meetings, etc.).


Policy/Protocol Oversight:



  • Maintain and oversee the updates and edits to the University’s Undergraduate Social Host Policy, including oversight for the required Sober Monitor Training.

  • Meet with Chapter presidents on a regular basis to ensure their compliance with university policies and to assist them with chapter growth and development.

  • Evaluate and implement risk management protocols for all Greek organizations, and work closely with Risk Management and the Sewanee Police Department to ensure safety for Greek events and programs.

  • Work with Risk Management and Legal Counsel to facilitate bi-annual insurance renewal for the University’s local Greek organizations.


New Program Creation/Implementation:



  • Create, implement and evaluate a comprehensive hazing prevention program for Greek chapters and other campus programs and organizations.

  • Coordinate bi-annual Alumni Greek Council meetings and maintain consistent communication with the Alumni Greek Council officers .

  • Advise the Order of Omega, a Greek honors organization, to provide an avenue for positive Greek leadership programming.


Partnerships and Collaborations:



  • Work closely with the Office of Civic Engagement to promote active civic and community engagement for our Greek chapters.

  • Work closely with colleagues in the Dean of Students office and collaborate with them on events, trainings, and programs (i.e. orientation, housing selections, student activities events, annual leadership recognition, Homecoming).

  • Serve at the deans and directors level for the University’s on call program (approximately 2-3 weeks/semester).

  • Represent the Student Life division at campus events when appropriate.

  • Serve on University committees as appointed.

  • Other duties as assigned.




Judgment Required Performance of the essential duties of this position is dependent upon independent ingenuity and developmental efforts.


Budgetary Responsibility Monitors expenditures against budget; prepares budget data for review/approval by supervisor/department head.


Machines & Equipment Used


Education

Master’s Degree in higher education/student affairs or related field (i.e. communications, public relations, counseling/social work, leadership development) or a Bachelor’s Degree with equivalent work experience





Experience

Professional work/grad assistant experience in student life/student affairs. At least 2-3 years serving in an advisory/administration role in Greek life.
