Description


The Community Engagement and Events Coordinator for the Office of Economic Development & Tourism works to engage community stakeholders and citizens to support and grow experiences that enhance quality of life, tourism development and economic development in the City of Lynchburg. The Coordinator serves as the primary point of contact for special events in City facilities, permitting and coordinating all city services.


Essential Duties


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.



  • Serves as the facilitator and first point of contact for citywide special events

  • Works collaboratively with city staff, community partners and outside organizations to ensure high levels of customer service

  • Develops and implements strategies to support the growth of special events and drive revenue for the City and retail, restaurants, lodging and attraction partners

  • Manages cross-departmental committee to schedule and staff events in public facilities, including Riverfront Park, the Bluffwalk and others

  • Coordinates the James River Arts & Cultural Grant Program to support and grow arts and culture events and activities

  • Manages a portfolio of stakeholder relationships, including community organizations and events rights holders, to coordinate and create programs and activities

  • Represents the department at community and civic events

  • Assists with the development of marketing and partnership strategies to grow events

  • Provide support to the Director and Assistant Director on placemaking strategies and other projects as assigned

  • Responds to citizen/community needs and concerns in a timely, professional and thoughtful manner

  • Understands that events and community engagement may require non-traditional work hours including occasional nights and weekends


ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:



  • Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.

  • When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES


This job has no supervisory duties. Minimum Education and Experience Required


QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university, with experience in communications, marketing, public relations, or closely related field; at least three years of experience in special event management and/or sports management.


Successful candidates will be a self-starter and well-organized with a working knowledge of technology platforms. The position requires well-developed writing and public speaking skills, judgment and tact in maintaining effective relationships with public agencies and citizens. Any combination of education and experience that qualifies an applicant may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.


Preferred Skills:



  • Strong organization, financial management, time management and communications;

  • High level of proficiency with digital support tools, including customer relationships databases, economic impact calculator and others;

  • Ability to schedule, coordinate and manage various projects of varying degrees of difficulty, size and complexity;

  • Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines;

  • Ability to work with multiple stakeholder groups, internal and external to the City;

  • Competence in marketing and public relations principles;

  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, ordinances, statutes, and regulations;

  • Program coordination principles and techniques;

  • Report preparation;

  • Grant contract administration.


Additional Requirements



  • Possession of valid driver's license issued by Commonwealth of Virginia and acceptable driving record according to City criteria.

  • Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 180 days of employment. May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position
