Provides direction and leadership to the development, implementation and daily management of the appraisal (and environmental) function. Ensures regulatory and bank policy compliance, and adherence to service level agreements associated with the commercial and residential appraisal and environmental functions. Leads a team of appraisers, environmental specialists, operational staff, and evaluation specialists who are tasked with monitoring the quality and compliance of appraisals, evaluations and environmental reports.


  • Evaluates and maintains appraisal review standards, guidelines, techniques, and methods for conformance with policies, procedures, and applicable laws and regulations. Ensures compliance with legal and regulatory requirements and partners with Audit/Compliance to monitor compliance.

  • Develops policies and procedures to ensure appropriate acceptance, rejection, or correction of all appraisals and evaluations.

  • Supervise appraisal operations to ensure maintenance of approved appraiser list for both commercial and residential services and appropriate application of policies and procedures.

  • Ensures the appraisal review process is efficient and service-oriented. Implements process improvement initiatives that enhance quality and service levels.

  • Evaluates quality measurements, appraisal and vendor performance through the use of reports and other management tools. Analyze reporting to identify trends/changes with regard to needs, quality issues potential gap areas, etc. Proactively addresses areas of opportunity in conjunction with identified trends.

  • Provides technical guidance to the department regarding issues which may result in a material defect, USPAP or regulatory, compliance or operational violation.

  • Ensure procedures are documented, compliant with applicable laws and regulations, and updated as needed. Ensure timely completion of designated staff compliance training.

  • Assist other departments, including Corporate Property Services, Risk Management and Special Assets, by providing data for decision making for property disposition, leasing, purchase and valuation for internal purposes.

  • Oversee the review and approval of new products, promotions, services, etc. according to established compliance review procedures. Implement corrective measures in response to internal and external examination/review findings.

  • Stays current on regulation changes. Follows all Bank policies and procedures, compliance regulations, and completes all required annual required or job-specific training. May be asked to coach, mentor, or train others and teach coursework as subject matter expert.

  • Oversees department financial performance, managing income and expenses to assigned department budgets.

  • Demonstrates compliance with all bank regulations for assigned job function and applies to designated job responsibilities - knowledge may be gained through coursework and on-the-job training. Keeps up to date on regulation changes.

  • Follows all Bank policies and procedures, compliance regulations, and completes all required annual or job-specific training.

  • Maintain a working knowledge of Bank's written policies and procedures regarding Bank Secrecy Act, Regulation CC, Regulation E, Bank Security and other regulations as applicable to this job description.

  • May be asked to coach, mentor, or train others and teach coursework as subject matter expert.

  • Bachelor's degree in business or related field or the equivalent in education and experience.

  • Appropriate state appraiser certifications.

  • MAI Designation.

  • 12+ years of progressive experience in all facets of property appraisal. An equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable. Experience in both residential and commercial property appraisal and evaluation is required.

  • 3-5 years management/supervisory experience required.

  • Advanced knowledge of appraisal techniques and bank standards.

  • Strong knowledge of FIRREA, USPAP, and state regulations.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Proven ability to work at all levels of the organization and maintain mutually beneficial working relationships cross-functionally.

  • Sound judgment and strong business acumen.


  • Office environment with no specific physical or environmental demands.

  • Occasional travel required.
