We're looking for an enthusiastic Human Services Specialist II for our Charleston County office who serves as a specialist in Child Protective Services /Family Preservation to plan and execute case work activities to facilitate safety permanence and well being of children who have experienced abuse/neglect. Under limited supervision, performs specialized case management in areas of child welfare services, including by not limited to the areas of protective and preventive services, permanency planning, and treatment services for children and families.


The Human Service Specialist II conducts face-to-face and telephone interviews for the purpose of collecting information for child protective services as required by agency policy and applicable law(s).


Conduct investigation and assessment of reported child abuse/neglect, or exploitation cases w/in time frames established by agency policy and law. Determine validity of such reports and investigate circumstances surrounding the alleged abuse and/or neglect. Address identified safety concerns.


Provide treatment services for children and families for child neglect, abuse, or exploitation cases by methods such as counseling with adults and/or children or family members, referrals to other agencies or community resources; provide support services in the home, etc. Address all safety concerns


Contact collaterals to enhance or clarify information gathered during the initial intake interview. Conduct automated and available Internet searches to ensure that information gathered during the intake process is accurate and complete.


Maintain case records, case narrative recordings written and electronically (into agency designated system) for documentation and auditing purposes as required by agency policy in a timely manner. Complete the CFASP timely and for reassessment purposes throughout the life of the case.


Provide after-hours intake and on-call coverage during a designated rotation for child protective services, gathering information, assessing for safety and risk and initiating contact as directed by the on-call supervisor.


Remove children from abusive or neglectful homes in order to place them in a protective environment. Assist law enforcement and/or Family Court in emergency removal of children and placement in a protective environment.


Provide case management services according to agency policy and procedure. Enter all documentation into CAPSS timely as required by Agency Policy. Complete documents and/or maintains files in such a manner that funding recoupment can be made on behalf of the Agency.


Complete court work and agency reports as required. Participates in agency and/or professional staffings on cases as required.


Participates in Red Cross training and shelter duty or other emergency shelter duty/services as directed.

A Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, Behavioral Science or Social Science.


A Bachelor's Degree in any other field and one (1) year of professional experience in related field.


Knowledge of the aging and disabled population preferred. Ability to organize and maintain a caseload. Ability to effectively plan, coordinate and manage complex treatment interventions. Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and community partners. Upon hire, the employee will attend APS Basic Training to acquire knowledge in case management practice, interviewing techniques, investigation techniques, and other necessary skills to provide case management.

Must be able to cope with stressful and life threatening situations. Must be available for after hours/on call duties, occasional overnight travel. Must be willing to transport clients.
