Department Description
The Department of Women’s and Gender Studies (WGST) is an academic unit in the College of Arts & Sciences. Our mission is to serve the undergraduate populations by offering a major and a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies. We also offer a graduate minor to Ph.D. students working on issues of women and gender in other departments ( The Department of Women’s and Gender Studies is also home to the Program in Sexuality Studies ( The Department of Linguistics provides students with the tools to analyze the languages of the world and the languages and dialects spoken in our state. We offer courses in formal grammar, sentence structure, sound patterns and meaning, computational linguistics, language acquisition and sociolinguistics, and more. We offer an Undergraduate Major and Minor, an MA in Linguistics, and students can pursue a Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics in conjunction with Romance Studies. We also offer an interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Computational Linguistics. (

Position Description
This position is shared by three organizations: Women’s and Gender Studies (WGST), the Program in Sexuality Studies (SXST) and Linguistics (LING). The position serves as the primary office support and the primary contact with the College of Arts & Sciences Business Center for accounting and Human Resource interactions for all three units. It is responsible for administrative support for the Department Chair of WGST, Director of SXST and the faculty and staff of WGST and SXST. Additional duties include but are not limited to event and conference planning; parking coordination; acting as the building facilities manager as the liaison between the occupants and facilities services; acting as the liaison between the Graduate School, Teaching Assistants and their Home Departments to ensure that all of their paperwork is in order; assisting students enrolled in the program’s minor, campus, state, national and international partnerships; basic publicity and correspondence; and listserv and Website management. The Department Manager also supervises the Student Services Specialist in Linguistics.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in business administration or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
The selected candidate must demonstrate superior interpersonal skills, have strong customer service skills, and strong oral and written communication skills. Attention to detail, coordination, leadership, problem-solving, confidentiality, strong organizational skills, and adherence to and prioritization of deadlines is a must. The chosen candidate must have a demonstrated ability to multi-task, work independently or with a team, and assist with events and other related administrative tasks in a fast-paced environment. A working knowledge of MS Office and relevant office equipment is required. The ability to explain financial, budgetary, and human resources related issues/policies is essential, as well as the ability to interact effectively with faculty, staff, students, vendors, etc.

Preferred Qualifications
The selected candidate is preferred to have a working knowledge of PeopleSoft/ConnectCarolina, Infoporte, and Adobe Acrobat XI Pro, as well as UNC policies/procedures. Previous administrative experience in a higher education setting, or at least 2-3 years of experience in administrative work is preferred. BA in Business Administration or equivalent is also preferred
