Job Description:


Provide academic support for the Master of Public Health Program. This includes providing individual assistance to students needing tutoring in core quantitative courses, providing data analysis and technical support to students working on their theses, and coordinate teaching assistant for Introduction to Biostatistics and Data Analysis I & II. The Academic Support Specialist will be the data manager for the Brown SPH Jackson Heart Study Vanguard Center and provide analytic support for students using Jackson Heart Study. The Academic Support Specialist will take a leading role in the development and implementation of educational initiatives of the MPH Program, including mini-courses (SAS, Stata, etc.), and summer and extra-curricular enrichment activities (e.g. mini sessions on math or communicating quantitative information). Other duties include assisting the Director with activities related to teaching and research in public health and assisting with MPH curriculum development and activities.


Major Responsibilities


Provide quantitative analytic assistance to MPH students working on their thesis or APHE (30%)


Supporting Actions: Meet with individual students and faculty during the thesis and APHE proposal process to understand thesis data management and data programing needs. Advise students and faculty on scope of assistance available and how that will impact thesis and APHE products and timelines. Assist in data management and data programming. Requires knowledge of SAS and STATA.


Coordinate Teaching Assistants for Introduction to Biostatistics and Data Analysis I & II (20%)


Supporting Actions: Assist Professor with preparation of course materials, train and organize lab TAs, maintain databases used in course projects.


Provide tutoring to MPH students in need of help in Epidemiology, Biostatistics and other quantitative methods courses (20%)


Supporting Actions: Meet with students individually or in groups to assist with coursework and preparation for exams. Meet with Professors to identify group needs and develop supporting materials that can be used in individual and group tutoring.


Development and implementation of quantitative educational initiatives of the MPH Program, including mini courses (SAS, Stata, etc.), and summer and extra-curricular enrichment activities (e.g. math or communication of quantitative sessions) (15%)


Supporting Actions: Work with Director, Leadership Committee, and Curriculum committee to identify and implement quantitative educational initiatives. Coordinate instruction of and prepare materials for initiatives.


Data Manager for Brown SPH Jackson Heart Study Vanguard Center (10%)


Supporting Actions: Coordinate IRB for JHS Vanguard Center, coordinate investigator requests and data access, provide analytic support for students using JHS data.


Monitor student progress and write student progress letters (5%)


Supporting Actions: Track student progress in courses, identify students not maintaining good academic standing or not meeting concentration requirements, write student progress letters.


Dimensions


This position will support 90+ new MPH students per year (180+ MPH students total).


This position will support 5+ TAs and lab instructors for Biostatistics and Data Analysis I & II.


This position will work closely with 6-7 faculty teaching core courses.


Job Qualifications


Education and Experience



  • Master's degree required in appropriate field, preferably an MPH

  • Data management and analysis experience using Stata (preferably also has experience in SAS and R)

  • Experience teaching or tutoring


Job Competencies



  • Comfortable tutoring students in Epidemiology and Biostatistics

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong scientific writing skills

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
